Every eleven minutes a woman is raped in Brazil. Every eleven minutes, one minute of sounds and lights violate the space.
"Maria da Penha" is an installation by Cão. It consists of a 12 channel audio file transmitted through Logic from an Apple computer to 6 speakers, 2 subwoofers and 4 amplifiers, synchronized with 4 stroboscopes and 4 red police lamps spread out disorderly in a dark room with walls and floor covered with black plastic.
The title of the work refers to the Brazil's Federal Law 11340, also called Lei Maria da Penha [Maria da Penha Law]. It was sanctioned on August 7, 2006 by the President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with the intent of reducing domestic violence.
It was presented at Labsonica, Oi Futuro - Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on September 5th 2017.
